Dr. Kapadwala can provide for diabetic shoes for certain high risk patients that meet the criteria for coverage. Medical insurances may cover therapeutic shoes and inserts for persons with diabetes. This benefit is limited to one pair of shoes and up to 3 pairs of inserts per calendar year. However, in order to qualify, specific requirements have to be met. In addition to the patient being a diabetic, there has to be at least one documented risk factor for developing diabetes related foot complication such as: previous amputation in the foot, or history of foot ulcer, or history of pre-ulcerative calluses of either foot, or peripheral neuropathy and evidence of callus formation of either foot, or foot deformity of either foot, or poor circulation (i.e., small or large vessel arterial insufficiency) in either foot.
